Powered by Nexenta’s incredible Nexentastor ZFS file system implementation, the AberSAN ZXP can be configured under a single Namespace/Volume that can start with a small amount of storage capacity and later be scaled to over 5 petabytes of continuous, uninterrupted storage in a single Namespace/Volume.

AberSAN ZXP features an intuitive web based GUI management that is used for both configuring the array(s), and for the control of a wealth of enterprise level software features. These features include, but are not limited to, unlimited snapshots and clones, block level replication, file level replication and management of virtualized storage.

AberSAN ZXP is Cloud ready and Virtualization ready with features such as 128 bit addressing, huge storage file sizes, nearly unlimited clones and support for multiple, concurrent server virtualization vendors. Virtualization enables thin provisioning, while improving performance via I/O pooling, which actually improves performance as more storage is added. I/O performance can be further enhanced through the strategic deployment of optional, fast SSD drives in hybrid storage pools.

Software Defined Storage

The Aberdeen AberSAN ZXP4 Series and Petarack are prime examples of the new trend known as Software Defined Storage (SDS). SDS is an approach to data storage in which the programming that controls storage related tasks is decoupled from the physical storage hardware. Software defined storage puts the emphasis on storage services such as deduplication or replication, without locking the user into overpriced, proprietary hardware.

Storage Without Limits

The Expanding Digital Universe and continuing explosive growth of disk based storage means that limitations to legacy storage systems are going to be critically important in the months and years to come.

A storage system built upon 32bit addressing is never going to be as flexible and scalable as one built upon a 128bit system. So AberSAN Z-Series, thanks in part to the use of ZFS, has a number of advantages vs. legacy and Linux or BSD based solutions. These include:

Unlimited snapshots. With the exponential increase in the amount of data stored, snapshots need to become more granular if they are going to be able to be restored in a timely manner. Legacy solutions are limited to up to 255 snapshots. By comparison, AberSAN Z-Series can accommodate 2 to the 48th snapshots. This means you can run hourly snapshots, for example, on all of your data which in turn means that you can restore in a timely manner and that the incremental amounts sent over the network can be smaller than daily updates.

Unlimited file system size. Again, thanks to the legacy nature of many existing solutions, each file system is often limited to a relatively small amount of data stored. There are no such limits when you use AberSAN Z-Series.

Target FC
The Target FC Plugin provides a set of capabilities, including an intuitive user interface, that assist in the use of the AberSAN as a block-level target (Fibre Channel only). Target FC includes adaptive multi-pathing so that performance scales up as needed with additional threads — and manages these threads over time including closing them if they are not needed. It also provides the ability to easily create logical groups of initiators and targets to enable such common block level management tasks as LUN mapping so that a particular application, for example, has unique access to a particular ZVOL, or virtual block device, and thereby inherits the storage management policies unique to that ZVOL such as replication and protection schemes.

High Availability Cluster Plugin
The HA Cluster plugin enables two AberSAN instances to be configured as an active / active pair. When installed and configured, each instance of AberSAN is able to perform all regular functions while at the same time the Plugin provides high availability for shared storage accessible from both appliances. The storage jointly managed via HA Cluster is configured as shared storage. You can also establish RAID and replication policies to protect the data itself in a number of ways with the aid of the software.
