The VIA VT82C580VPX Apollo VPX/97 core logic chipset is a high performance, fully compatible and cost-effective core logic chipset for Socket-7 mainboards. With key features that include an asynchronous 75MHz CPU bus, Microsoft® PC97-compliance, and specific performance enhancements, the VIA Apollo VPX/97 is the optimum choice for the full range of socket-7 system designs.
The VIA Apollo VPX/97 provides Intel Pentium® and Pentium® processor with MMXTM, Cyrix/IBM 6x86TM and 6x86MXTM, and K5 and K6 MMXTM processor and cache interface support. To enable proper implementation of the Cyrix/IBM 6x86 200+ processor the chipset features an asynchronous CPU bus which operates at either 66 or 75 MHz speeds. Apollo VPX/97 also supports Cyrix/IBM linear burst mode.
The VIA Apollo VPX/97 features the VIA VT82C586B PCI-IDE south bridge controller chip. Highly integrated, this chip complies with the Microsoft® PC97industry standard by supporting ACPI/OnNow, Ultra DMA/33 and USB technologies.
The Apollo VPX/97 builds on the legacy of the VIA VT82C580VP Apollo VP, widely recognized by leading international IT publications as the highest performing Socket-7 chipset. The Apollo VPX/97 features a fast DRAM controller with support for SDRAM, EDO, BEDO and FPM DRAM types in mixed combinations with 32/64 bit data bus widths and row and column addressing. Additional features include a deeper buffer with enhanced performance, an intelligent PCI bus controller with Concurrent PCI master/CPU/IDE operations and zero-wait-state PCI master and slave burst transfer rates. Support for up to 2MB of L2 cache and up to 512MB DRAM rounds out this chipsets performance enabling feature set.
Cosmetically akin its predecessor the Apollo VP, the four-chip Apollo VPX/97 provides mainboard designers a clear upgrade path to a much higher level of technical integration. The chipset is manufactured in economical and proven PQFP packaging. As an option for more cost-conscious system designs, Apollo VPX/97 supports UMA, which does away with the graphics frame buffer, thereby reducing overall system costs.
VIA offers mainboard designers a choice of Apollo VPX-class chipsets. The VIA Apollo VPX/97 consists of the VT82C585VPX north bridge and VT82C586B south bridge. VIA also offers a non-PC97 version of the Apollo VPX. This chipset consists of the VT82C585VPX and VT82C586A and is an optimal choice for entry level PC designs.
