Powered by Nexenta's incredible Nexentastor ZFS file system implementation, the AberSAN ZXP can be configured under a single Namespace/Volume that can start with a small amount of storage capacity and later be scaled to over 5 petabytes of continuous, uninterrupted storage in a single Namespace/Volume.
The AberSAN brings the simplification typical of network attached storage (NAS) server installations to the SAN environment by combining Fibre Channel and iSCSI block level connections with multi-user network sharing. Aberdeen removes storage and partition size limitations to deliver ease of use and flexibility, while featuring more efficient cross platform collaborative editing and shared media storage for post-production, content creation and any business in need of cost effective, scalable storage.
Storage without limits
The Expanding Digital Universe and continuing explosive growth of disk based storage means that limitations to legacy storage systems are going to be critically important in the months and years to come.
A storage system built upon 32bit addressing is never going to be as flexible and scalable as one built upon a 128bit system. So AberSAN Z-Series, thanks in part to the use of ZFS, has a number of advantages vs. legacy and Linux or BSD based solutions. These include:
Unlimited snapshots. With the exponential increase in the amount of data stored, snapshots need to become more granular if they are going to be able to be restored in a timely manner. Legacy solutions are limited to up to 255 snapshots. By comparison, AberSAN Z-Series can accommodate 2 to the 48th snapshots. This means you can run hourly snapshots, for example, on all of your data which in turn means that you can restore in a timely manner and that the incremental amounts sent over the network can be smaller than daily updates.
Unlimited file system size. Again, thanks to the legacy nature of many existing solutions, each file system is often limited to a relatively small amount of data stored. There are no such limits when you use AberSAN Z-Series.
With AberSAN Z-Series you can scale performance the same way that you scale performance of other applications by adding to hardware performance by increasing memory available or CPU performance or the number of targets available.
Multi-level data protection
AberSAN Z-Series protects your organization's data with features and capabilities ranging from the most granular, per transaction data integrity checks to higher level backup and disaster recovery capabilities.
Every read or write made by AberSAN Z-Series utilizes ZFS data integrity. To avoid accidental and silent data corruption ZFS provides end-to-end checksumming and transactional copy-on-write IO operations. These operations eliminate the 'write-holes' and silent data corruption that have plagued storage solutions that are not based on ZFS.
AberSAN Z-Series is built from the ground up on the revolutionary file system ZFS which means that virtualization is at the core of AberSAN Z-Series. This virtualization enables thin provisioning and also improves performance via I/O pooling. This means that when you add more disks or systems to AberSAN Z-Series the overall solution accelerates. Another benefit of AberSAN Z-Series is that it can run within VMware or other virtualized environments.

The Target FC Plugin provides a set of capabilities, including an intuitive user interface, that assist in the use of the AberSAN as a block-level target (Fibre Channel only). Target FC includes adaptive multi-pathing so that performance scales up as needed with additional threads -- and manages these threads over time including closing them if they are not needed. It also provides the ability to easily create logical groups of initiators and targets to enable such common block level management tasks as LUN mapping so that a particular application, for example, has unique access to a particular ZVOL, or virtual block device, and thereby inherits the storage management policies unique to that ZVOL such as replication and protection schemes.
High Availability Cluster Plugin
The HA Cluster plugin enables two AberSAN instances to be configured as an active / active pair. When installed and configured, each instance of AberSAN is able to perform all regular functions while at the same time the Plugin provides high availability for shared storage accessible from both appliances. The storage jointly managed via HA Cluster is configured as shared storage. You can also establish RAID and replication policies to protect the data itself in a number of ways with the aid of the software.
VM DataCenter (VMDC)
The VM DataCenter application dramatically simplifies the experience of storage and system administrators in setting storage polices for their virtual environments and in performing common tasks such as stopping and starting VMs and performing template based clones as well. It is easily installed using standard system utilities. It provides a user interface that discovers all ESX or Xen servers and all Virtual Machines (VMs) on the servers. Users can establish replication policies for each VM and can perform common VM management tasks such as stopping and starting VMs. Also, the AberSAN with VMDC can be used for cloning via the 'template' functionality of VMDC to dramatically accelerate provisioning of identical VMs.
Delorean Plugin (Advanced Backup Utility for Windows)
Delorean is a high-powered Windows Backup, Restore and Search tool, with multiple advanced capabilities.
With Delorean you can extend the power of the AberSAN right to the your end users' computers, ensuring that your company's data residing on client machines, as well as servers, is protected. Delorean consists of a client -- that runs on end user Windows machines -- and a Plugin that adds capabilities to the AberSAN. End-users can select what local files and folders they want to protect via a built-in File Explorer interface. Delorean supports Windows VSS, combined backup + snapshot capability, and any backup schedule.
Cross-Platform Multi-Host SAN Target Sharing Support
metaSAN is a high-speed file sharing Storage Area Network (SAN) management software that sets new standards for cross-platform workgroup collaboration. metaSAN enables multiple users to share access to common data files in workgroups where heavy bandwidth requirements are the norm. With metaSAN, film and video editors, digital artists, healthcare specialists, and corporate users can simultaneously access a common pool of data files such as video clips, databases, satellite imagery, medical archives, or CAD files - as easily and transparently as if the content was stored on their local drive.
Aberdeen SAN Virtual Appliance (SAN-VA) Plug-in
The virtualized version of the AberSAN is pre-installed on a VMware Ready Certified Aberdeen server. SAN-VA consolidates all the elements of an enterprise level shared storage and powerful features of the VMware ESX environment into a single server.
When the Aberdeen's SAN-VA Plug-in is deployed on a single VMware ESX server, that server can share local storage resources with other servers in the environment. This is accomplished without the need for external storage arrays, host bus adapters (HBA), or costly switches. The included internal disk drives are detected and incorporated into the management console through a simple GUI. At that point, the local storage pool can be provisioned and allocated via the iSCSI protocol, which operates over standard Ethernet cabling.
The virtual SAN Plug-in can be deployed on two AberSAN servers to enable high availability (HA). Multiple AberSANs can share storage with each other as well as additional Aberdeen Stirling VMware Certified Ready servers. In this model, each AberSAN with the SAN-VA Plug-in maintains mirrored data from the other SAN server. If one of the servers is lost, all virtual machines that were running on the failed server can restart using the storage resources of the remaining server. Reliability and uptime are optimized as applications are quickly brought back online.
